It’s such an incredible event site with amazing architecture and history. If you have any relatives or guests who happen to be engineers, machinists or architects, they’ll LOVE exploring this historic facility inside and out. If you know any Microbrewery, Hand-crafted beer, Oak-Aged Ale FANS, they would be truly elated if you chose this local spot as your event venue!
Roundhouse, located on the Fox River and Burlington train line, was built in 1856 as a facility to repair railroad cars and steam engines of locomotive trains. The building was constructed of 18 foot walls made of limestone from quarries in Batavia, IL. Forty huge bays were ultimately built “in the round” to serve as a machine shop and repair center for steam trains. The steel truss & limestone building was designed by Levi Hull Waterhouse. To date, it’s the oldest limestone roundhouse in the United States. Architecture buffs would point out that this structure is technically not a circle, it’s a tetracontagon structure comprised of 40 sides!
Roundhouse was placed on the National Historic Register in 1978. The 157 year old building was constructed with a beautiful iron loggia interior, limestone exterior. The building closed in 1974, as the popularity of cars and highways decreased the volume of train commuting traffic on the Burlington line. Roundhouse re-opened in 1995 as a restaurant and pub, after having been purchased by Walter Payton (Chicago Bears and Hall of Fame Running Back) and a few investors. Roundhouse is now owned by Two Brothers and this 70,000 square feet facility can accommodate events of 25-600 guests. Consider holding your wedding ceremony in their outdoor gazebo, it’s an amazing setting for an event. Roundhouse is located just northeast of downtown Aurora. Many folks dine here, prior to attending a function at the Paramount Theater in Aurora, another terrific area landmark.
